“Suicide does not end the chances of life getting worse, but suicide eliminate the possibilities of it ever getting better.”-Kat Carhoun. In a world were problems and challenges are the norm, the need to constantly create awareness on mental health cannot be over emphasized. You don’t have to struggle in silence because there’s someone somewhere willing and ready to help. Thus, in this week’s project we took time to source for data sets on global suicide rate from 1985 to 2016. Our aim was to give proper insight into global suicide rate that will in turn help in creating intentional awareness of the importance of mental health globally. That is not high in your location does not necessarily means it cannot be high in the future, so we hope that our analysis will encourage people to seek help when necessary and also to render help where you can. Our analysis cut across 121 countries of 6 continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South, America and the Oceanic (Australia)).

Now, looking at the dashboard, you will agree with me that suicide rate is high among Males than Females and though we don’t have the data as to why that is so, we cannot overrule the weight of responsibilities that on the average young man to provide for people under his care, which most times could be overwhelming. Another very important information gotten from this analysis shows that suicide rate is at its peak among the 35-54 years old. Again, we can only come up with hypothesis as to why this is so which could be this particular age bracket is has high level of pressure from every aspect of life, be it career, family, parenting, etc. Global we discover that Europe recorded the highest rate of suicide and Russian Republic tops all other countries in terms of suicide rate while San Marino had the lowest and worthy of note is Saint Kitts and Nevis and Dominica had 0 suicide records. 1999 recorded the highest number of suicides at 256119 deaths by suicide. Suicide death rate alone is about 7M within 101 countries, suicide is never an option seek help

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • There should be constant awareness on all social media by government to educate the citizens on the negative effects of suicide.
  • Non-governmental organizations should also participate in creating mental health awareness
  • Government should set up sustainable programs that guarantees the provision of basic human necessities to its citizens in order to ease their burdens and reduce pressure.
  • People should do themselves well to seek help, when necessary, you don’t have to hold it all in there when you could actually get help.
  • Finally, a living dog is better than a dead lion, you owe yourself the duty to guard your mental health and to seek the kind of help you need
